For Veterinarians

Cannabis and CBD Information

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not approved cannabis for any use in animals, and the agency cannot ensure the safety or effectiveness of these products. For these reasons, FDA cautions pet owners against the use of such products and recommends that owners talk with their veterinarian about appropriate treatment options.

Here are some common questions about cannabis and cannabis-derived products (click to see the answers):

  1. I’ve seen cannabis products being marketed for pets. Are they safe?
  2. Can hemp be added to animal food?
  3. Can approved human drugs containing CBD or synthetic THC be used extralabel in animals?
